Has Geno Smith been named the starting quarterback for the Seahawks? Although it may not be official, it feels that way right now. Pete Carroll, the head coach of the Seahawks, said on Seattle Sports Radio that Smith will start the preseason’s last game against the Dallas Cowboys on Friday before being replaced by Drew Lock.
In training camp, both quarterbacks were competing to succeed Russell Wilson, who was traded to the Denver Broncos this summer. Smith had appeared to be in the lead early on, playing the majority of first-team snaps.
In a team scrimmage last week, Lock, who is vying for the starting position, outperformed Smith. He also produced better numbers through the first two preseason contests. Nevertheless, Lock was disqualified from last week’s game against the Bears after testing positive for COVID. After the game, Carroll said that Lock’s absence had caused the schedule for designating a starting shift. It appears that Smith is still his first choice.
