Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33 KO’s)
Golovkin last fought in September when he defeated Kell Brook by fifth round TKO. Golovkin normally fights two or three times a year and rarely has he been tested. This fight against Jacobs could be different as Jacobs has lost only once in his career.
“It’s big news for me. I am very excited,” Golovkin said, “I think it’s a very big fight and great fight for you guys to watch. Danny is an amazing fighter. He is a tough opponent and No. 2 in the middleweight division. He is my toughest opponent. Hopefully, I fight three times next year. There are big plans for 2017 (but) right now I am focused on Jacobs and I am here to fight.” Abel Sanchez, who is the trainer for Golovkin said that this is one of the few fights that has the attention of GGG. “This is the first fighter who really poses that kind of threat, to Golovkin and to me.” Sanchez said, “Also, because obviously I don’t want this (streak of wins and knockouts) to end – I have to make sure that we do the things that are necessary to where we destroy him in the same way that we’ve destroyed everybody else.”
If Golovkin wins this fight he could end up taking on Canelo Alvarez later in the year in what would be a marquee matchup.

Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KO’s)
Jacobs fought just once last year as he defeated Sergio Mora by 7th round TKO in September. Jacobs is getting a big chance to make his mark in this fight against Golovkin. “I’m excited about facing GGG and proving I’m the best middleweight in the world,” Jacobs said, “On March 18 I’m bringing all the belts back to Brooklyn with me.”
Jacobs said that he can handle the power of Golovkin. “I’ve been down twice in my career but I’m not worried about my chin,” said Jacobs, “He’s a very strong guy but it’s up to me to prove I’m quicker and better. I don’t know how hard he punches, I’ve never faced him. But anybody can be hurt and I’m confident in my power that I can hurt him. All the questions about my chin and heart will be answered on March 18.”
Jacobs has been preparing for this fight with Andre Ward in his camp. “Having Andre Ward here in my camp is terrific. I have a great deal of respect for him, he’s a role model for me, we’ve known each other since the amateurs. I greatly appreciate his support,” Jacobs said.
