Betting Preview: Kansas Jayhawks vs. Oklahoma Sooners

Oklahoma is the heavy road favorite and is currently giving up 35.5 points to Kansas. Oddsmakers have set the over/under (O/U) at 67 points, and if one squad can find paydirt early, it would likely produce a nice in-game betting scenario.

Odds have moved from where they were originally placed, as the opening line was 34. The game’s total hasn’t moved after it was set initially at 67.

The Sooners have gained 0.0 units so far and are 3-1 against the spread (ATS). The team has posted an O/U record of 2-2.

The Jayhawks have been a pleasant surprise for moneyline bettors this season, gaining 4.8 units. They’re 1-4 ATS and have an O/U record of 3-2.

The Sooners are 4-0 straight up (SU), including 1-0 SU against Big 12 opponents. The Jayhawks are 2-3 SU overall and are also 0-2 SU in conference play.

The Sooners are looking to stay undefeated after a 55-16 victory over Texas Tech last week. the Sooners completed 23-of-34 passes for 443 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Jalen Hurts went 17-for-24 for 415 yards, three touchdowns and one interception while Tanner Mordecai completed four-of-six for five yards. Hurts (70 yards on nine rush attempts, one TD) also mounted the running attack in the win. CeeDee Lamb (seven receptions, 185 yards, three TDs) and Jadon Haselwood (six catches, 59 yards) shared the receiving duties.

Back on September 28, TCU got the win against this Kansas crew by a score of 51-14. The Jayhawks defense allowed the Horned Frogs to pass for 306 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 319 yards and four scores. Darius Anderson put up a good showing in the win, recording 115 rushing yards and a score on 18 attempts for TCU. For Kansas, Carter Stanley completed 12-of-29 passes for 84 yards and one touchdown. Pooka Williams Jr. (12 yards on eight rush attempts) led the ground game in the defeat while Andrew Parchment (four receptions, 10 yards) led the pass-catching corps.

When looking at offensive play-calling, each team sports a similar run-pass ratio on the season. Oklahoma has run the ball on 57.0 percent of its offensive possessions while Kansas has a rush percentage of 55.8. Having said that, the Sooners have run for 293.5 yards/game and have 14 touchdowns via handoffs this year. The Jayhawks haven’t been quite as productive, as they’re totaling 164.4 rushing yards per game (108.5 in conference) and have five total rush TDs.

The Sooners offensive scheme has averaged a ridiculous 375 yards in the air overall and has 15 passing scores so far. The Jayhawks have put up 189 pass yards per outing (180 against Big 12 competition) and have nine total pass TDs.

Oklahoma appears to have an edge in both areas of the defense. The team has let opponents run for an average of 155.5 yards and pass for 189.8 yards per game. The Kansas defense has given up 213 yards per game to opposing passers and 211.4 yards per game to opposing runners. The Sooners are allowing an adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A) of only 4.76 to opponents, while the Jayhawks have given up a 6.18 ANY/A.

Hurts has been more effective than Stanley of late, as his adjusted net yards per pass attempt stands at 16.78for the season (and 16.63 over the past two outings). Stanley’s ANY/A is 5.61 for the year and 6.53 across his past two games.

These two teams met a year ago with the final outcome being a 55-40 win for Oklahoma.
