Surfing Odds: The 6th event of the 2016 WSL season gets underway on Wednesday, July 6th in South Africa with Mick Fanning favored to win the J-Bay Open. Fanning will be getting a lot of attention in this event because last year he was attacked by a shark while competing in the finals. Fanning is listed as the favorite with odds of 4.5-1 while Jordy Smith is the second choice in the betting at odds of 7-1.
Here is a look at the J-Bay Open and surfing predictions.
Mick Fanning 4.5-1
Jordy Smith 7-1

J-Bay Open
This event takes place in Kouga, Eastern Cape, South Africa at Jeffreys Bay which is located just off the N2 Highway. The J-Bay Open was not part of the schedule for two years in 2012 and 2013 but it returned in 2014 with Mick Fanning getting the win. Last year it was Fanning and Julian Wilson splitting the title after the final was called off after the shark attack on Fanning. Jordy Smith won the title in 2010 and in 2011. Fanning has won this event three times in his career, in 2002, 2006 and 2014. “When I decided I was only going to do a few events this season, J-Bay was always on the cards,” Fanning said. “Even if I decided I didn’t want to surf in the J-Bay Open, I was always going to go back. I’ve had so many great memories there that to leave J-Bay on the note from last year just didn’t seem right. I want to go back and right the wrongs and move forward.”

It would be a great story if Fanning was able to win this event but I think he is overvalued at odds of just over 4-1. I will take Jordy Smith at odds of 7-1 and Adriano de Souza at odds of 14-1.
