Carolina Hurricanes at San Jose Sharks Odds
The Sharks (-130) are favored over the Hurricanes (+110) and the oddsmakers have set the Over/Under (O/U) at 7 goals (-110 for the over, -110 for the under).
Carolina is 6-1 straight up (SU) and has earned moneyline bettors 2.9 units this season. That SU winning percentage, ranked second in the NHL so far in this young season, is a solid improvement compared to how the team performed during the 2018-19 season (46-36). Through seven regular season matches, Four of its games have gone over the total, while two have gone under. The Canes are 3-0 SU as the road team in 2019-20.
The Hurricanes have scored on 20.8 percent of their power play chances so far. That’s a good improvement from last season, when they were ranked 26th in the NHL by scoring on 16.4 percent of their extra-man chances. Their penalty kill has also gotten stronger since last year, as they’ve gone from successfully defending 79.3 percent of opponents’ power plays (ranked 21st overall last season) to 81.3 percent this year..
With a .933 save percentage and 37.0 saves per game, James Reimer (2-1) has been the primary option in goal for Carolina this season. If it chooses to rest him, however, head coach Rod Brind Amour might go with Petr Mrazek (4-0), who has a .919 save percentage and 1.94 goals against average this year.
On the other side of the ice, San Jose is 2-4 straight up (SU) and has lost 2.1 units for moneyline bettors this year. Four of its contests have gone under the total, while two have gone over and none have pushed. It’s 1-1 SU at home this season.
The Sharks have killed off a remarkable 90.0 percent of all penalties, a few points higher than the 80.5 percent they recorded a year ago (when they were ranked 14th in the NHL). They have converted on 13.6 percent of their power plays this year after scoring on 22.5 percent (ranked sixth in league) last season.
Martin Jones (25.5 saves per game) has been the top selection in goal for the Sharks. Jones has one win and three losses to his credit and has recorded a pedestrian 3.58 goals against average and a subpar .887 save percentage this year.
