The UFC opens up its 2017 season with UFC Fight Night 103: Rodriguez vs. Penn, which will be the second event held in Phoenix. The main event comes from the featherweight division, where former lightweight and welterweight champion B.J. makes his return to the company to take on Yair Rodriguez, who won The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America.

Yair Rodriguez vs. B.J. Penn – Featherweight
Rodriguez (8-1) is coming off a split-decision win over Alex Caceres in August, and he is a strong striker, although he has shown improvements on the mat. Penn (16-10-2) has not fought since a TKO loss to Frankie Edgar in July 2014, and he just came off a drug suspension. Penn is one of the greats of MMA, but he seems to be past it and if you throw in rust, it might not be good night for him.

Joe Lauzon vs. Marcin Held – Lightweight
Both men are coming off losses as Lauzon (26-12) lost a split decision to Jim Miller in August, while Held (22-5) fell via unanimous decision to Diego Sanchez in his UFC debut in November. Held is a former Bellator tournament winner, but he did not show his full arsenal in his debut, and it will be interesting to see if he goes to the mat with Lauzon, who is a great grappler, but Held is world class. Take Held with your betting picks in this spot.

Court McGee vs. Ben Saunders – Welterweight
McGee (18-5) beat Dominique Steele in a unanimous decision in August, while Saunders (20-7-2) submitted Jacok Valkmann in September. Both are versatile fighters, although McGee probably gets the edge in both striking and grappling. He should be able to pull this one out. McGee is the better option.

Jimmie Rivera vs. Bryan Caraway – Bantamweight
Rivera (20-1) dominated Urijah Faber in September, and Caraway (21-7) won a split decision overe Aljamain Sterling in May. Caraway is a dangerous grappler with 17 submission wins, but Rivera has good enough takedown defense that he should be able to keep this fight standing up.

John Moraga vs. Sergio Pettis – Flyweight
Moraga (16-5) needs a win after losing a split decision to Matheus Nicolau in July for his second straight loss, while Pettis (14-2) has won two in a row after a unanimous decision over Chris Kelades in April. Pettis is not as good as striking as his older brother, former UFC lightweight champion Anthony, but he is good enough for this division and he can handle himself on the mat as well. Pettis should be the one who emerges with the victory in this spot.
