Back in the Bay Area, Christian McCaffrey is going. The powerful dual-threat rushing back will be transferred from the Carolina Panthers to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for many draft selections. The Panthers will receive a second-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, a third-round pick, a fourth-round pick, and a fifth-round pick in 2024 in exchange for McCaffrey. The transaction was subsequently announced by Carolina and San Francisco.
According to Rapoport, McCaffrey has already talked with the Niners’ head coach Kyle Shanahan and “club brass” and will arrive at his new residence on Friday. If he plays against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, as expected, McCaffrey will probably be utilized in a red zone package.
McCaffrey has attracted interest since Carolina dismissed head coach Matt Rhule in October, and it ultimately came down to NFC West opponents. The Panthers requested a first-round selection, but neither club was willing to part with one, so Carolina received what it saw as a fair substitute.
