World Baseball Classic
The World Baseball Classic gets underway in early March with the United States a slight favorite to win the title. There are four pools with four teams each with round-robin play starting on March 6th and concluding on March 12th. Pool A has South Korea, the Netherlands, Israel and Chinese Taipei with the games played in South Korea. Pool B has Japan, China, Australia and Cuba with the games played in Tokyo. Pool C has the United States, Canada, Colombia and the Dominican Republic with the games played in Miami while Pool D has Italy, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela with the games played in Mexico. The winners and runner-ups from each group will advance to another round-robin group. The semifinals take place on March 20th and 21st with the final on March 22nd. World Baseball Classic Odds United States 2-1 Dominican Republic 2.5-1 Japan 3-1 Venezuela 9-1 Puerto Rico 10-1 South Korea 12-1 Cuba 18-1 Mexico 25-1 Netherlands 35-1 Chinese Taipei 50-1 Canada 60-1 Italy 95-1 Field (Any other country) 40-1 The United States is favored even though they have done next to nothing in this tournament in the past with just a .500 record. The Dominican Republic is the defending champion as they won the title in 2013. Japan won the event in 2006 and 2009. United States Team The U.S. has never even reached the title game in this event, yet they are favored. The lineup for the U.S. should be Ian Kinsler, Daniel Murphy, Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, Giancarlo Stanton, Buster Posey, Christian Yelich, Adam Jones and Brandon Crawford. The starting pitchers are led by Chris Archer, Danny Duffy, Tanner Roark and Marcus Stroman while the bullpen has Andrew Miller, David Robertson and Luke Gregerson. Dominican Republic Team This team is loaded and a case can be made they should be favored. They have a starting lineup of Starling Marte, Manny Machado, Robinson Cano, Adrian Beltre, Nelson Cruz, Jose Bautista, Hanley Ramirez, Welington Castillo and Gregory Polanco. They have Johnny Cueto and Carlos Martinez as their top starters and Jeurys Familia and Dellin Betances to lead the way in the bullpen. Venezuelan Team The Venezuela team has a lineup of Odubel Herrera, Jose Altuve, Miguel Cabrera, Carlos Gonzalez, Martin Prado, Victor Martinez, Ender Inciarte, Salvador Perez and Alcides Escobar. They have Felix Hernandez and Martin Perez in the rotation and Francisco Rodriguez and Bruce Rondon in the bullpen.
